Planning your certification strategy

What kinds of certification are there?

Certifications are available for general management, whatever your market sector (e.g. ISO 9001 Quality Management), and for the way you work with suppliers (SA 8000 Social Accountability).

Some certifications will apply across a number of market sectors (e.g. ISO 27001 Information Security), others may be appropriate for specific markets (e.g. ISO 13485 Medical Devices).

What order do I do them in?

We’ve listed potential certifications for that sector, starting from the most specific down to more general management certifications.

However, you may prefer to start with a general quality management certification, like ISO 9001, and add others specific to your market sector.

What if I want to do further certificates after my current one – is there a clash?

You’ll be reassured to know that the different certifications hinge on similar principles. Starting a new certification will mean a similar approach – rather than abandoning the work you did already.

What about certification if my industry changes?

New certifications being developed over time (e.g. ISO 50001 Energy Management).
